Cheese substitutes, known as cheese analogue, have been available on the market for a long time. The main ingredients for such substitutes are vegetable oil, starch and dairy protein. Apart from the economic advantage of cheese substitute, it also has health benefits because it contains vegetable oil instead of animal fat. Cheese substitutes come in different qualities and types, which determine the flavour. In terms of consistency and colour the cheese is similar to melting cheese. This project is commonly used in the ready-made meal industry, for example on pizzas or in lasagne. Vepo Cheese can supply cheese substitute in grated form mixed with other types of cheese.

In the Netherlands, labelling usually indicates the fat content in the dry matter: this remains the same as the cheese ages, while the absolute fat content increases because riper cheese contains less moisture.
